LAFAYETTE, La. - Donna Bourgeois tossed a no-hitter and No. 14 Louisiana-Lafayette collected 11 hits in a 5-0 non-conference softball victory over Southern Miss here Wednesday afternoon at Lamson Park.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Golden Eagles (9-11-1), while the Ragin' Cajuns who had not played since Feb. 22, improved to 11-2 on the year.
Bourgeois retired the Golden Eagles in order in the first on three strikeouts, before the Cajuns took the lead for good with a solo run in the bottom of the frame on a RBI single by Melissa Verdi. Bourgeois finished the day with 12 strikeouts and walked three Southern Miss batters to run her record to 9-1 on the campaign.
Megan Hill drew two of the walks for Southern Miss and Lauren Castellvi added the other.
The Cajuns extended the lead to 3-0 in the second on a two-run single by Codi Runyan and then completed their scoring with two final runs coming in the fourth. An RBI single by Gabriele Bridges started the fourth-inning scoring with the final tally coming later on the same play via a Southern Miss error.
UL then got two bunt singles with a pair of outs and then added a single to left from Verde as they looked to extend the advantage, but Brandi Alonzo came up throwing and gunned down the Cajun lead runner at the plate to end the inning.
Courtney Ramos pitched all six innings for Southern Miss and allowed 11 singles and five walks to give up four earned runs, while striking out three to suffer the loss and fall to 6-4 on the year.
The Golden Eagles return to action this weekend on the road when they play at UAB in their Conference USA opening series. The two teams play a 1 p.m., doubleheader Saturday and then a single-game 1 p.m. contest, Sunday, in Birmingham.
