Track and Field Teams Perform Well At Alabama Relays

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Southern Miss outdoor track and field teams competed in the Alabama Relays over the last two days and turned in several top performances.
Freshman Kyle Smith recorded a regional qualifying mark in the javelin with a throw of 210'3", finishing first out of 27 competitors. Noah Slater placed fifth with a throw of 185'4". Aaron Ammons placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 50'9.25"
Mario Spann ran a time of 10.78 in the 100 meters, placing in a tie for fourth. Vincent Tanui finished second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:30.69.
The 4x400-meter relay team ran a time of 3:19.14 for a sixth-place finish.
Ashley May was the top finisher in the long jump with a mark of 19'6.75". Zuna Portillo-Rodriguez ran a time of 11:51.79 in the 3,000 steeplechase.
Jessica Cheeks placed fifth in the triple with a jump of 38'9", followed by Simona Costache with a jump of 38'7". Jessica Bussey finished fourth in the javelin with a throw of 132'0".
The 4x100-meter relay team ran a time of 47.11 to finish fourth. The 4x200-meter relay team turned in a time of 1:38.70 for a second-place finish. The 4x400-meter relay finished fourth with a time of 3:39.50 and the sprint medley relay team was seventh with a time of 4:26.02.
Both teams will be in action April 2-4 at the Texas Relays.
