Softball Splits Pair of Games in USM Invitational on Saturday

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss finished the second day of the USM Invitational here at Oak Grove High School by defeating Arkansas 9-7 in the first game, before falling to Samford 8-3 Saturday night.
In the Golden Eagles' opener against Arkansas, Southern Miss jumped out to an 8-1 lead but had to fight off the Razorbacks late to capture the victory.
Logan James and Alexis Hurley each tallied a pair of RBI, while Courtney Hill, Kristin Pilgrim and Ashley Razey added a pair of hits each.
After falling behind 1-0, Southern Miss tallied three runs in the second, one more in the third and four in the fourth.
Courtney Ramos got the victory in her debut, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits and six walks, while fanning a pair. Samantha Davis threw the final two innings and allowed a run on two hits and one strikeout to garner the save.
After falling behind 1-0, in the nightcap, Kristin Pilgrim doubled home two runs in the fifth to put the Golden Eagles up. That lead was shortlived as Samford put up seven runs in the next frame, highlighted by a three-run homer by Katie England.
Pilgrim finished the game with two of the Golden Eagles' five hits.
Lana Vaughn (0-1) went the distance and suffered the loss, allowing eight runs (three earned) on 12 hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
In earlier games during the day, Western Kentucky defeated Central Arkansas 9-0, Arkansas then defeated WKU 7-4 and Samford upended UCA 6-5 in nine innings.
The final day's schedule features Samford playing WKU at 10 a.m., and Arkansas at 12:30 p.m. WKU then faces UCA at 3 p.m. and the Golden Eagles take on UCA at 5:30 p.m. to complete the event.
