BATON ROUGE, La. - No. 20 LSU scored a run in each of the first three innings in posting a 3-1 decision over Southern Miss in non-conference action Wednesday night at the New Tiger Park.
Southern Miss falls to 6-10-1 on the season. The Golden Eagles tallied three hits in the game, one each by Lauren Castellvi, Ashley Razey and Leslie LeJune.
"It was nice to have Sam back throwing tonight," Coach Howard Dobson said. "This was one of her better performances and getting her back on track is what we need. We came out a little in awe of LSU's new stadium and their top 20 ranking and we didn't get off to the best start."
Samantha Davis (1-4) took the loss, allowing seven hits with two earned runs. LSU's Cody Trahan (2-0) picked up the win, giving up only one hit and striking out eight Golden Eagle batters in five innings. Casey Faile came on to work the final two innings and picked up her second save.
"After we settled down, we gave ourselves a chance to win," Dobson said. "We are starting to grow, but not as fast as we want to. This is the type of game that will help us get ready for conference schedule."
LSU got on the board in the bottom half of the first inning when Kirsten Shortridge started the inning with a single to short, then, stole second. Rachel Mitchell singled down the left field line, plating Shortridge.
With two out in the second inning, the Golden Eagles threaten to score when Castellvi drew a walk and moved to second when Razey singled down the left field line. Both runners moved up one base on an illegal pitch, but Trahan ended the inning with a strikeout.
LSU tacked on a run in the bottom half with Mouse drawing a walk and moved to second on an infield hit. Shortridge then single to center to plate Mouse.
LeJune started the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Courtney Hill. Trahan then retired the next batter before LeJune was caught stealing.
LSU scored its final run in the third with two outs and a runner on first when Young reached base on an error to move Santos over to third. Mouse singled through the right side to plate Santos.
The Golden Eagles scored their only run in the top of the seventh when Logan James reached base with a walk, followed by single to left by Castellvi. With two outs, Britney Jones came on to pinch hit and drew walk to load the bases. LeJune hit a one-hopper down third and James was able to score on the error. Faile then got Courtney Hill to ground out to second with the bases loaded.
Southern Miss returns to action, traveling to Kennesaw State for the Owl Classic, Feb. 27-28.
