Southern Miss Men's Tennis Defeats No. 75 UNO

HATTIESBURG, Miss. Southern Miss defeated No. 75 UNO Tuesday afternoon at Hattiesburg Country Club. The victory marks the second nationally ranked team defeat for the Eagles this season.
"I am really proud of the team," said head coach Teddy Viator. "This is the second nationally ranked team we have beaten so far this season. We have a couple more ranked teams coming up."
Southern Miss took an early lead over UNO by winning the doubles competition. Patricio Alvarado and Markus Wessinghage defeated Ben Smith and Jose Gaspar, 8-5, while Diego Machuca and Domagoj Anic tallied a win at No. 3 against Oliver Cuthill and Vinay Kamineni, 8-3. Andrew Poole and Jan Burmeister fell to Calvin Kemp and Guilherme Rebolo, 8-5.
"We played really well in doubles again," said Viator. "Patricio (Alvarado) played really well. We also played really well again at No. 3."
The Eagles held onto the lead as they tallied four more wins in singles matches. Patricio Alvarado held UNO's Calvin Kemp to a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Domagoj Anic added on to the lead defeating Vinay Kamineni, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 2 spot. Andrew Poole knotched a win over Guilherme Rebolo, 6-4, 6-3, while Diego Machuca defeated Ben Smith in the challenging last match of the day, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Strate Krstevski lost his first dual match of the season to Jose Gaspar, 6-2, 6-3. Oscar Machuca also fell to Oliver Cuthill, 6-3, 6-3.
"We played really well at the top of the lineup," said Viator of the singles competition. "We won the first four spots. Patricio (Alvarado) played great at the No. 1 spot, he played a really good player and beat him really bad."
"We beat a solid team pretty well, so I am really pleased with them. I am anxious to see what we are going to get in the rankings," said Viator. "So far we have done well and we are looking forward to continuing doing well."
Southern Miss will return to action Friday, February 20, as they host Troy at the Hattiesburg Country Club. The match is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
