HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team hit the practice field here Tuesday afternoon in an effort to get ready for its final non-conference tilt of the year against Louisville this weekend.
The game is set for 6:30 p.m. CT, Saturday, at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium in Louisville and will be televised on ESPNU (744 and 396 in HD on Comcast Digital Cable in Hattiesburg). The radio broadcast can also be heard on the Southern Miss ISP Sports Network.
The Golden Eagles worked in full pads through a small rain shower during the 2 hour, 30 minute practice and second-year coach Larry Fedora was pleased with team's practice as well as quarterback Martevious Young, who make his second start of his career against the Cardinals in replacement of injured Austin Davis.
"The guys came out with a purpose and practiced hard," Fedora said. "We started installing the game plan and I think they understand what is going on. Martevious looked really good with the things he was doing today and the guys are rallying around him."
Fedora also noted that running back Damion Fletcher, along with wide receivers DeAndre Brown and Johdrick Morris looked good during practice and each got a multitude of reps during the workout. In addition, senior tight end Leroy Banks went through the whole practice after not doing much during the Sunday session.
"I am not sure if he was 100 percent, but he was running around catching balls and doing the things we asked him to do," Fedora said.
This will be the 28th overall meeting between the two schools in football and first meeting since the 2002 campaign. Southern Miss leads the series 18-8-1.
