Larry Fedora Media Conference Oct. 5, 2009
Opening Statement:
"Obviously everyone is aware of our game against UAB and how poorly we played as a football team in all three areas. We've got to get ourselves back on track this week and have another great week of practice and play the game the way we're supposed to play it."
On the health of running back Damion Fletcher and wide receiver DeAndre Brown:
"They both practiced last night and looked pretty good. It was not a heavy contact practice, but they both looked good."
On the injury of Austin Davis:
"I don't know about the pain. In the game, when it happened, he said, `I can go this next series, but I just won't be as mobile.' He never said anything about the pain or what it was like. There was an MRI done and we got the results and now it is what it is."
On new starting quarterback Martevious Young:
"Martevious has a stronger arm and more velocity on his ball. Other than that, there are a lot of similarities (when compared to Davis). That's why we don't have to change what we do. Martevious has done a great job of preparing himself week in and week out. That's the life of a second-team quarterback. You have to know the whole game plan inside and out, but you don't get as many reps (in practice) and you have to be ready at the drop of a hat. That's what that position entails and he's known that and has prepared himself in case something happens. Now, it's happened."
On any other injuries:
"(Tight end) Leroy Banks didn't practice last night. (Linebacker) Jeremy Snowden didn't practice last night. We anticipate those guys will be ok, but we'll see."
Impressions of Louisville:
"One thing is (Head Coach Steve) Kragthorpe is always going to have a very sound football team in all three areas. They do a great job on their returns, and I think they are settling in on a quarterback. I don't know what that situation is. He's always done a great job of moving people around and getting an advantage on you with his h-back or receivers. He's always run the ball. Everywhere he's been, if you really break it down and look at it, he runs the football. Defensively, I think this is the best year they've had."
On how quarterback Austin Davis is responding to injury:
"(He's responding) just like you think Austin would. He was disappointed, I'm sure, initially. We talked about what his role is now and how he helps this football team from this point on. He's out there at practice and he's talking to (Young). He's got to convey the reps and experience that he's gotten to (Young) whether it's in the film room or out on the field. He's got to do it. I don't have any doubts that he will."
On the performance of wide receiver Quentin Pierce:
"He's another example of a kid who got that opportunity to make plays because someone in front of him didn't make the trip due to injury and he shows up and makes plays. That's football. That's just the way it is. Guys get hurt; it's a physical game."
