Southern Miss Volleyball Team Sweeps Memphis, 3-0

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Southern Miss volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-14) win over Memphis in Conference USA action Friday night improving to 22-4 overall and 10-2 in league play.
Ashley Mell record a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs and Caitlin Clarke added 10 kills. Four Eagles finished the match with three or more blocks and three players had an attack percentage of .350 or better.
"We had another good team effort," coach Ricci Luyties said. "Our outside hitters started out carrying the offensive load, then, the middle hitters got involved and did a nice job. Caitlin had some key blocks to go along with 10 kills and a .400 hitting percentage. Angela played great for her first match."
The Golden Eagles led from start to finish in the opening set as Southern Miss nearly doubled the Tigers in kills. Memphis got within three points late, but the Eagles closed out the match with an 8-4 run for a 25-18 win.
The second set was close throughout as neither team managed to build any type of lead. There were nine ties and four lead changes. With Memphis leading, 17-15, Southern Miss put together a 10-5 run to close out the set, 25-22.
Following the intermission, Southern Miss popped out to an early lead, but Memphis came right back to tie the set at 4-4. From there, the Golden Eagles outscored the Tigers, 6-1, and never looked back on their way to a 25-14 win.
Southern Miss concludes its road swing at UAB on Sunday.
