HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team had to put off opening its home portion of its schedule for one week because of Hurricane Gustav. Now the Golden Eagles will host Southeastern Louisiana Tuesday in Reed Green Coliseum at 7 p.m., in a match that was postponed. Admission is free.
Southern Miss is fresh off three wins at the McNeese State Invitational, where the Golden Eagles captured their second tournament title, defeating Mississippi State, Grambling State and Nicholls State in the process.
A pair of seniors leads the Golden Eagle attack, Stevi Cherry and Ashley Petrinec. Cherry is hitting a solid .331 with 56 kills, while Petrinec is hitting .240 with 47 kills and is second on the team in digs with 44.
Junior Angela Hlavaty has contributed to the early success and is third on the team in kills (45) and total blocks (23). The Eagles have gotten a boost from freshmen Lauren Sears and Sarah Jane Bowden on the front line. The freshmen duo has combined for 56 total blocks and 83 kills.
Maia Ivanova, who surpassed the 1000-dig plateau, leads the team with 77 digs and eight service aces.
Freshmen setters Kelsea Seymour and Bridget Whalen have shared the setting duties, recording 80 and 71 assists, respectively. Seymour adds a solid service game with seven aces.
The Lady Lions come into the match having played only one match, a 3-1 loss to South Alabama. Hurricane Gustav reeked havoc for Southeastern causing the postponement of two matches as the team evacuated Wesley College in Florence, Miss., for one week.
Following the Southeastern Louisiana match, Southern Miss hits the road for its third tournament when the Golden Eagles travel to San Diego Tournament, Sept. 12-13. Southern Miss opens with Big 12 power Texas A&M, followed by nationally ranked San Diego and close out the tournament against Cal State Fullerton.
