Volleyball Team Cruises To 3-0 Win Over Nicholls State

LAKE CHARLES, La. - The Southern Miss volleyball team pushed its record to a season-best 6-0 start, defeating Nicholls State in three sets (25-18, 25-18, 25-20).
Stevi Cherry led the way with a team-high nine kills, followed by Angela Hlavaty and Lauren Sears with eight kills apiece. Maia Ivanova collected 14 digs with Ashley Petrinec adding 11. Lauren Sears also added seven blocks.
Both team battled early in set one with neither team leading by more than a point. With the score tied at 13-13, Southern Miss used an 11-5 run to close out the 25-18 win.
In set two, the Golden Eagles got a strong service game from Kelsea Seymour down the stretch in guiding Southern Miss to a 25-18 win.
Southern Miss finished the set with a .343 attack percentage, committing only three attack errors to its way to a 25-20 win in the final set.
For the match, Southern Miss out hit Nicholls State .231 to .034. The Golden Eagles continue to dominate at the net, collecting 10.0 team blocks.
Southern Miss returns to action on Tuesday in a re-scheduled match against Southeastern Louisiana that was originally scheduled for Sept. 3. Game time is set for 7 p.m., in Reed Green Coliseum.
