SMU Mustangs Best Southern Miss, 3-1, In Volleyball Action

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Three Golden Eagle players recorded double digit kills, led by seniors Ashley Petrinec and Stevi Cherry, but it wasn't enough as SMU (9-7, 2-1) bested Southern Miss, 3-1 (30-28, 25-18, 17-25, 25-20), in Conference USA play Sunday.
Petrinec (14 kills, 15 digs) and Cherry (13 kills, 11 digs) put together double-doubles for Southern Miss (10-6, 0-3), while Lauren Sears added 10 kills. Maia Ivanova tallied 17 digs.
SMU scored first in the opening set and a back-and-forth battle ensued before the Golden Eagles out scored the Mustangs, 12-6, to break a 9-9 tie. Following a SMU timeout, the Mustangs put together a 7-1 run to tie the set at 22-22. From there, the set was tied six more times before SMU took the opening set, 30-28.
SMU took a 2-0 lead after out hitting the Golden Eagles .233 to .077 in the second set. SMU topped the Eagles, 25-18.
Southern Miss popped out early in the third set and held on for a 25-17 win. The Golden Eagles got a solid service game recording three aces.
The fourth set started with the Mustangs jumping out to an early lead. Southern Miss was able to get within two points on two occasions, but the Mustangs again kept the set just out of reach, eventually taking a 25-20 win.
Southern Miss returns home to begin a four-match home stand. The Golden Eagles host East Carolina and Marshall, Oct. 3 and Oct. 5.
