Softball Opens Fall Season With Pair of Games Saturday

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team opens its 2008 fall schedule Saturday when they play a pair of games at the Southern Miss Softball Complex (595 N. 25th Ave.).
The Golden Eagles face Gulf Coast Community College at 4 p.m., and Nicholls State at 6 p.m. William Carey also will be in attendance, as there will be a total of five games played during the day's activities.
"This tournament gives us our first chance to see where we are at in terms of our progress this fall," said second-year coach Howard Dobson. "It also affords us an opportunity to see what our new players can do in a game environment."
Southern Miss, which finished 25-30 a season ago, returns nine letterwinners including its top two hitters, Megan Hill (.333, 6, 29) and Kristin Pilgrim (.306, 4, 27). Three pitchers also are back including Samantha Davis, who tallied a 15-12 mark a year ago with a 2.53 earned run average. She also comes off a season in which she fanned 88 batters.
The Golden Eagles welcome nine new players as well, including three outfielders, two infielders, two catcher/infielders, a utility player and one pitcher.
