Volleyball Hosts In-state Rival Alcorn State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team kicks off a busy week of action when the Golden Eagles host in-state rival Alcorn State Tuesday at 7 p.m., in Reed Green Coliseum.
Southern Miss (7-3) is coming off a winless weekend at the USD Tournament where the team had its seven-match winning streak snapped. Freshman Sarah Jane Bowden earned all-tournament honors for her performance, tallying 17 kills with a .333 attack percentage and six total blocks.
Senior Stevi Cherry leads the Eagle attack with 96 kills followed by Ashley Petrinec with 70. Maia Ivanova is the dig and ace leader with 118 digs and 11 aces, respectively. Head Coach Ricci Luyties continues to use a two-setter offense utilizing both freshmen setters, Kelsea Seymour and Bridget Whalen. Seymour has recorded 149 assists to go with eight aces and 47 digs, while Whalen has 100 assists.
As a team, Southern Miss is averaging 11.26 kills, 11.24 digs and 2.63 blocks per set, while out hitting its opponent, .186 to .124.
Alcorn State comes into the match with a 0-6 record following three losses at the Missouri State Invitational.
Following the Alcorn State match, Southern Miss opens Conference USA play against UCF, Thursday.
