Southern Miss v. Arkansas State Game Notes September 13, 2008 ASU Stadium
* Captains for Southern Miss were tight end Shawn Nelson, defensive back C.J. Bailey, cornerback Eddie Willingham and free safety Eddie Hicks
* Southern Miss is now 9-2 all-time against Arkansas State. They are also 3-1 in Jonesboro. The last trip was in 1962. The victory was the sixth straight over the Red Wolves, dating back to 1978.
* This was only the fourth trip for Southern Miss to the state of Arkansas. The Golden Eagles are now 3-1.
* Southern Miss is now 2-0 against the Sun Belt Conference this year. The Golden Eagles defeated Louisiana-Lafayette, 51-21, on August 30.
* The Golden Eagles game-opening drive lasted 19 plays and took 10:17. Both were season-longs.
* Sophomore placekicker Justin Estes' 23-yard field goal in the first quarter was his first attempt of the season.
* Estes' two field goals improve him to 17-of-24 on his career.
* Junior running back Tory Harrison's one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter was his first touchdown of the year.
* Sophomore tight end Jonathan Massey's one-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter was the first of his career.
* Senior tight end Shawn Nelson's 110 receiving yards moves him into fourth-place all-time at Southern Miss with 1,760. It was the fourth highest receiving game of his career.
* This was also Nelson's second consecutive 100-yard receiving game, the second time in his career that has happened. He also had consecutive 100-yard games in 2005 (Tulane - 113, Arkansas State - 121).
* Redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Anthony Gray recorded two sacks in the game, just his second and third sacks of his career.
* Junior wide receiver Freddie Parham's 40-yard kickoff return in the third quarter was Southern Miss' longest return of the season and the longest of his career.
* Sophomore defensive back C.J. Bailey's recovered his first career fumble in the third quarter. It gives Southern Miss a forced turnover in eight straight games.
* Junior running back Damion Fletcher's 24-yard touchdown reception was the first of his career.
* Fletcher's 61 receiving yards were the most in a game for his career.
* The score also capped off a 93-yard drive, the longest of the season. The previous high was a 90-yard scoring drive at Auburn.
* Senior defensive back Eddie Willingham's interception in the final minutes of the game was the first of the season and second of his career.
