LUBBOCK, Texas - The College Baseball Foundation has named Southern Miss head coach Corky Palmer and starting pitcher Barry Bowden to their "National All-Star Lineup" for week five of the college baseball season.
Each week the College Baseball Foundation puts together a team, including each position and a head coach, of the best performances throughout the nation.
Coach Corky Palmer led the Golden Eagles to unprecedented heights in Conference USA, becoming the first CUSA team to take a series from perennial power Rice, taking the Friday and Sunday game of the series over the No. 10 Owls. Palmer also led the Golden Eagles to a dramatic come from behind win over No. 15 Ole Miss in mid-week action.
In the past two weeks Palmer has picked up his 900th career victory, over UCF on March 21, and his 800th collegiate win, over Ole Miss on March 25. He needs only five more wins to become only the second coach ever to win 400 games at Southern Miss.
Bowden has emerged as the staff ace this season, earning C-USA Pitcher of the Week three times already this season, including the last two consecutive weeks.
Bowden had one of his best career performances this past Friday at No. 10 Rice. He out-dueled Rice All-American Ryan Berry in a 1-0 game at Reckling Park in Houston, propelling the Golden Eagles to take the weekend-road-series from the Owls.
Barry Bowden (5-1) picked up his fifth win of the season throwing 8.2 innings, scattering only four Rice hits and striking out ten.
He did not allow a Rice base runner until the third inning and did not surrender his first hit until the fourth. Rice did not have an inning in which they had more that one hit and only three runners were able to reach as far as second base.
The College Baseball Foundation (CBF) is dedicated to preserving college baseball history and recognizing standout teams and individuals who have influenced the collegiate game.
Established as a 501(c)(3) charitable educational organization, the CBF hopes to not only catalog the sport's history, but to foster an appreciation for the historical development of college baseball and its impact on our culture. The Foundation continues to place importance on the increasing public awareness of college baseball and to create exposure for those who play the greatest game ever played.
The College Baseball Foundation will release its "National All-Star Lineup" each week, giving accolades to the past week's top performers. The "National All-Star Lineup" is nominated by college coaches, staff, and baseball media contacts. -southernmiss.com-
