Hammond, La. - The Southern Miss softball team evened its record at 19-19, defeating Southeastern Louisiana in a mid-week game, 3-1.
Samantha Davis notched her 10 victory of the season, pitching her 11th complete game and allowing only one run. Jenna Yoder (7-6) took the loss for the Southeastern (22-12).
"It's nice to be able to come in here and get a mid-week win especially with us trying to get ourselves back on a roll," head coach Howard Dobson said. "It was nice to follow the UAB series with a win here and keep ourselves going in a positive direction. Southeastern is not slouch. That is a team that is doing well in the Southland Conference with a good winning record. They're going to beat some teams because they swing the bats well."
The Lady Lions did out-hit Southern Miss, 10-7. Kristin Chaney was 3-of-3 from the plate and Kristin Pilgrim was 2-of-3 with two doubles.
Southern Miss put two runs on the board in the top of the third inning when Brittney Pigott led off with a double through the left side and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brittney Jones. Allison Bullard reached on an error by the second baseman, scoring Pigott. Bullard then stole second before Megan Hill hit a deep fly ball to center, sending Bullard to third on the tag. Chaney then singled through the right side, plating Bullard.
The Lady Lions got one run back in the bottom of the fourth when Brooke Lockhart led off with a single and moved to second on a balk. Arica Rodriguez then singled down the left field line, scoring Lockhart. Davis then got Tamra Ladnier to hit into an inning double-play.
"Sam came in and did a good job, gave up a couple of hits here and there, but with runners in scoring position she settled in and made some big pitches to get herself out of the some innings," said Dobson. "We also had a couple of big defensive plays, turning a double-play to end the inning with runners on and a deep fly ball that Megan Hill ran down in right field that saved us, too. It was nice to see our defense step up."
Southern Miss added a run in the top of the six when Chaney led off with a bunt single. Pilgrim then delivered a double to right center, scoring Chaney from first. Rachel Ray then retired the next three batters.
Southeastern threaten in the bottom of the frame when Sherrill opened the inning with a single. S Miller came on to pinch run for Sherrill, but the Lady Eagles stepped up their defensive effort when Hill got the first out of the inning when she reached over the fence to catch a foul ball. Davis then struck out Lockhart. Kelly Lyman then singled through the left side. Davis then got Rodriguez to hit a grounder to second, forcing Lyman out at second.
The Lady Eagles managed to get a runner on base in the top of the seventh, when Brittney Jones struck out but reach on a pass ball. Ray then retired the next two batters.
For the third time, the leadoff batter reached base with a single. Davis then struck out Jill Machliet and got Kaley Christy to ground out to first base before striking out Allyson McCubbins to end the game.
Southern Miss returns home to host No. 19 Louisiana-Lafayette Wednesday in a single game. Game time is 6 p.m.
