MOBILE, Ala. - Beth Pilgrim threw a one-hitter and South Alabama scored a trio of unearned runs in defeating Southern Miss 3-0 in softball action here Wednesday night at Jaguar Field.
The Lady Eagles (9-7) dropped their fourth-straight contest as they managed just one hit and committed three outfield fielding errors.
"We just weren't very good tonight," said first-year coach Howard Dobson. "Our pitching, though, continues to do a great job of keeping us in games."
Samantha Davis (2-3) went four innings and allowed just one unearned run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts, despite getting tagged with the loss. Meghan Harbuck threw the final two frames for Southern Miss and allowed two unearned runs on three hits with a one strikeout.
USA opened the game's scoring in the third. With one out, Ashley Elmore doubled. After stealing third, Elmore scored on Autumn Hudson's fly ball to right that was misplayed by Brandi Alonzo.
The game remained that way until the sixth.
Hudson led off the frame with a single to left. A fielding error on Tara Donaldson fly ball to right by Holly Milner allowed USA to put runners on second and third. Corey Race then singled to left which allowed pinch runner Julie Morton to score. Milner then had trouble picking up the ball which allowed Donaldson to score but was able to throw out Race who tried to take an extra base.
Meanwhile, the Lady Eagles could not muster any offense.
Pilgrim (5-1) fanned the first two Lady Eagles to start the game before allowing a double off the left-centerfield wall to Southern Miss catcher Kristin Pilgrim. The USA pitcher then went on to retire the next 17 Southern Miss hitters until allowed a one-out walk in the seventh.
The Lady Eagles return to action this weekend at the Easton Purple and Gold Challenge in Baton Rouge. Southern Miss plays host LSU at 3:30 p.m., Friday, and then faces Penn State (11:15 a.m.) and South Alabama (6 p.m.), Saturday. The Sunday schedule will depend on the outcomes of the two previous day's action.
