HATTIESBURG, Miss. - With its 28-12 victory today over SMU, Southern Miss became bowl-eligible for the 15th-straight season and secured a spot in one of the six bowl games affiliated with Conference USA.
By winning its last four games to end the regular season, the Golden Eagles are one of six teams within C-USA which garnered bowl eligibility.
Although Southern Miss cannot go to the Auto Zone Liberty Bowl in Memphis because they did not reach the league's championship game, the Golden Eagles can go to one of five other bowl games the league is affiliated with including the GMAC Bowl in Mobile; the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas; the Texas Bowl in Houston; the MagicJack St. Petersburg Bowl in Florida and the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl in the Louisiana Superdome.
"Other than the Liberty Bowl, it is still pretty much up in the air where we could be going at this point," Southern Miss Director of Athletics Richard Giannini said. "Congratulations go to Coach Fedora and the team for winning the final four games of the regular season for us to be one of six C-USA schools to become bowl-eligible so we will be able to play somewhere this postseason for the seventh-straight year and 11th time in the last 12 seasons. We still may not know where we will go until after conference championship game next weekend. "
East Division champ East Carolina will play West Division Champ Tulsa next Saturday.
