HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's basketball team wrapped up its third practice session placing emphasis on defensive fundamentals during the afternoon, while morning session was used to work on offense using various drills.
"We had a very good practice in the afternoon session," Coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "I thought our intensity level was good. The morning session was more of a learning process and a little slower. When we were working on defense and rebounding, there was a lot of intensity. I was pleased with their progress."
Southern Miss returns nine letterwinners, including all five starters and has added four newcomers to the squad.
"Our veteran players are stepping up and being vocal and that elevates their play," said McNelis. "What has been fun for the staff, have been the freshmen from last season looking like different players. Their confidence level is up several notches. It has been fun to watch them continue their progress."
The Lady Eagles' practice hours during the week will be 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., each day. Southern Miss will play an exhibition game, Nov. 8, against the Houston Jaguars at 2 p.m. The Lady Eagles open the regular season at Sam Houston State, Nov. 14.
