HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team concluded its fall season, taking a double-header from Pearl River Community College Wednesday.
The Golden Eagles outscored PRCC, 15-1, in game one and followed with a, 5-1, win in the night cap.
"We are still a young team with nine new players who are freshmen and sophomores," Coach Howard Dobson said. "It was nice to see this team grow and mature from one game to the next. It also was nice to see them fight their way out of jams with good defense and timely hitting. They were able to build confidence in themselves and their team."
Southern Miss finished the night with a total of 21 hits that included four doubles, three triples and a home run by Logan James.
The Golden Eagle pitching staff allowed only two extra base hits, while striking out 15. Of the two runs allowed, only one was earned.
"What was good about this team is that whenever we were down in any of the games, they never panicked," Dobson said. "That is a sign of maturity and I liked that about this team."
Southern Miss will take some time off and before continuing their off-season strengthening and conditioning program.
The Golden Eagles open the 2009 season, Feb. 6-8, when they host the Southern Miss Invitational that include teams Arkansas, Central Arkansas, Samford and Western Kentucky.
