Volleyball Team Falls To Houston in Four Games, 3-1

HOUSTON, Texas -- - Southern Miss lost its second-straight match in Conference USA play, losing to Houston in four games with scores of 28-30, 30-25, 30-26, 30-22.
Southern Miss (9-9, 0-2) placed four players in double-digit kills, led by Amanda Huntoon with 16, followed by Angela Hlavaty, Morgan Johnson and Ashley Petrinec with 12 kills apiece. Johnson and Petrinec also recorded double-digit digs with 13 and 12 digs, respectively. Maia Ivanova recorded a team-high 20 digs, with Mari Ruddick and Amy Flarity adding 11 and 10 digs each.
Justin Farmer led Houston (7-6, 3-0) with a match-high 36 kills and 21 digs.
Southern Miss held on for a 30-28 win in game one, fighting off a late charge by Houston. Southern Miss stretched its lead to 26-20, but Houston would get within one, 27-29, but it wasn't enough.
The Cougars took the lead back winning games two and three behind Farmer's 19 kills and just three errors with a hitting percentage of .381. Houston never trailed in game two or three.
UH over came a 6-1 deficit, using a 12-6 run to take a 13-12 lead. From there, both teams battled back and forth, until Houston finally broke a 20-20 tie, to push ahead on four straight points. The Cougars ended the game on three straight kills for a 30-22 win.
Southern Miss returns to action on Friday, when the Eagles host Marshall and East Carolina in a weekend series, Sept. 28 and 30.
