Volleyball Team Picks Up Two Wins At the Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- - The volleyball team won its opening match against Alabama A&M in a three-game sweep by the scores of 30-19, 30-17, 30-26, then followed with an afternoon win over Southern University in three games, 30-18, 30-15, 30-18.
Angela Hlavaty led the way for the Golden Eagles against Alabama A&M with 13 kills, while Maia Ivanova recorded 10 digs. Brittani Johnson paced Alabama A&M with 14 kills, while Rose Cornelielle had 17 digs.
Southern Miss got off to a slow start, but finally found its offense. With the game tied at 11-11, the Golden Eagles outscored A&M 12-2, taking a 10-point advantage. Southern Miss hit .357, while A&M hit only .049 in taking game one, 30-19.
Southern Miss jumped out the early and continued to build on that early. The Golden Eagles used a balanced attack with Ashley Petrinec, Mari Ruddick and Hlavaty putting down three kills apiece. Southern Miss won game two, 30-17.
A&M controlled game three early, jumping out to a 17-12 lead. Southern Miss began chipping away at the Bulldogs' lead. With A&M leading, 20-14, the Golden Eagles put together an 11-4 run to take a 25-24 lead. Southern Miss went to win game three, 30-26.
In the afternoon match, Southern Miss improved to 6-7 after defeating Southern in three straight. Petrinec and Johnson led the way with 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Maia Ivanova recorded a match-high 27 digs, followed by Hlavaty and Amy Flarity with 11 digs apiece and Petrinec added 10 digs. Ena Payne led Southern with seven kills and 13 digs.
Southern Miss continues play in the Alabama State Invitational, when the Golden Eagles play Alabama State at 11:30 a.m., and conclude with Mississippi Valley State at 2:30 p.m.
