Volleyball Team Falls To Louisiana Tech

RUSTON, La. -- - The Golden Eagle volleyball team lost to Louisiana Tech in the morning match in four games, 30-20, 30-25, 19-30, 30-26, falling to 1-5.
Ashley Petrince led Southern Miss with 15 kills and 10 digs, followed by Amanda Huntoon and Morgan Johnson with 10 kills each. Maia Ivanova and Mari Ruddick led the team with 17 digs apiece, while Amy Flarity added 11 digs and Jillian Neave had 49 assists and 10 digs.
Shannon Phillips and Kristen Fairbanks led the way for Tech with Phillips garnering 20 kills and 15 digs, while Fairbanks finished with 14 kills and 13 digs. Setter Jill Walker tacked on 50 assists, while junior Brittney Nakamura finished with 14 digs.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 10-5 lead in game one, before Tech used a 5-0 run to tie game at 10-10. USM was able to push ahead, 16-14, but Tech reeled off six-straight points to take the lead for good, 20-16. The Lady Techsters closed out the game on a 10-4 run for a 30-20 win.
Tech never trailed in game two after taking a 10-5 lead. Southern Miss was able to close to within three points, 24-21, but Tech outscored the Eagles, 6-4, for a 30-25 win.
Tech popped out to a 2-0 lead, before the Eagles scored five-straight points to take a 5-2 lead. Both teams battled, with Tech cutting the lead to 7-6. Southern Miss then used a 13-5 run, building a 20-11 lead. The Golden Eagles held on for a 30-19 win in game three.
Both teams battle back and forth to open game four, but Tech went on a 7-3 run, taking a 10-6 lead that they would hold until Southern Miss used a 14-8, tying the game at 22-22. Tech regrouped and closed out the game with an 8-4 run for the 30-16 win.
Southern Miss returns to action on Sept. 4, when the Eagles open their home portion of their schedule against Alcorn State at 7 p.m., in the Payne Center.
