HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team united for the first full-squad practice, Monday, at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility, following a day of position and team meetings on Sunday.
"Today was the first day in shoulder pads," Head Coach Jeff Bower said. "It went well. We've had a few hitting drills during the day, and we're gradually getting into some different things with pads. We practiced for about two hours and 40 minutes, and I thought they worked pretty hard."
The Golden Eagles got a break with the weather during the workout as cloud cover was present for most of the final hour, keeping the sweltering sun from beating down on the 105 players going through their third day of practice.
Still, the team had to overcome the noises of the construction going on around them, including the repaving work that began Monday morning adjacent to the practice facility. Bower, though, enjoys seeing the progress on the Southern Miss campus.
"It's positive," said Bower about all the construction going on around the campus, including the South End Zone construction project and the installation of the state-of-the-art video board. "You should've seen the helicopters yesterday, bringing in the new scoreboard. When I see all of that happening, I get out of my office. If there are helicopters overhead, I'm getting out. I've heard too many bad things lately."
The Golden Eagles will continue preparations Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m.
