HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team went into Friday's scheduled fourth two-a-day practice of preseason camp with a vigorous two-hour morning workout. Their reward at the end of the first practice was an afternoon away from the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.
Coach Jeff Bower announced to the team after practice that instead of an afternoon workout, the Golden Eagles would enjoy activities together as a team and out of the hot summer weather.
"We are going to take them to a movie, get them off their feet and give them a little rest," said Bower, whose team goes through their final big scrimmage of the fall practice schedule Saturday at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
For the third day in a row, Bower talked about the improvement of the offense and the maturation of the unit as they begin to pick things up in practice.
"Sometimes you make a mistake on defense, and it doesn't affect you, at least not all the time," Bower added. "On offense, you've got to get them all on the same page, but this is typical. Every year it takes a little longer to get everyone going."
Bower also announced that senior defensive lineman Sean Merrill (D'Iberville, Miss.) will not participate in the scrimmage, Saturday, because of a foot injury. Bower hoped to get junior wide receiver Ed Morgan (Thibodaux, La.) and freshman Micah Pellerin (Madison, Miss.) back for the Saturday morning scrimmage. Morgan has a groin injury, while Pellerin notched a hip injury during fall drills.
Saturday will be "Meet the Eagles" Day following the scrimmage from 1-1:30 p.m., at Roberts Stadium. This event is free of charge. Fans are asked to enter the stadium through Gate 8 (north east corner of M.M. Roberts Stadium), beginning at 12:30 p.m.
Season and single game tickets are still available. Call the Southern Miss Athletic Ticket Office at 1-800-844-TICK (8425) or go online at www.SouthernMiss.com for more information or to purchase. The Golden Eagles open the season Sept. 1, versus Tennessee-Martin at "The Rock."
