HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team tried to work around the hot conditions for its two practices, Saturday, at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.
The Golden Eagles got a slight break in the temperatures during the three-hour, morning workout in shorts and shoulder pads, but returned later in the day only to endure a two-hour, late-afternoon practice in full gear, which reached triple digits on the thermometer.
A good portion of the afternoon workout concentrated on red-zone situations for both offensive and defensive units as the Golden Eagles used almost their entire time of the team portion of practice focused on that aspect.
Despite the oppressive heat over the first eight days of practice, Coach Jeff Bower has liked the fitness level of his team up until this point as they ready themselves for the season opener, Sept. 1, against Tennessee-Martin.
"I am pleased with our conditioning and our players really did a good job this summer, coming to camp acclimated to the heat," said Bower. "We have had very few problems with the heat and it has been really hot."
Sophomore running back Damion Fletcher, who had worn a green jersey over the last few practices, indicating a limited workout regimen, was back in the familiar white jersey that the offensive squad wears to practice.
The Golden Eagles will go through their annual media day, Sunday, before returning to the practice field with a Monday night scrimmage. The scrimmage is closed to the general public.
