Softball Ends Season with 8-4 Loss to East Carolina

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team ended the 2007 season with an 8-4 loss to C-USA rival East Carolina, today, at the Southern Miss Softball Complex, with 445 in attendance.
Sarah Bibee recorded a one-out three-run home run in the fifth, scoring Joyce Roodenburg and Vanessa Moreno, who both reached base on free passes from pitcher Shea Naramore, and extending the Pirates' lead over the Lady Eagles, 6-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, Jennifer Fox hit a high shot to center fielder Christina Merrida, resulting in a fielding error to send Melissa Prouty home for Southern Miss' first score of the game.
Jessica Johnson notched her second home run of the series, a two-run hit over left field, to score Charina Sumner, who singled to center field earlier in the sixth inning.
Southern Miss freshman Logan James started a rally for the Lady Eagles in the bottom of the seventh, hitting her ninth home run of the season, a one-out three-run shot to score Brandi Alonzo and Jennifer Fox. Megan Hill and Lauren Castellvi followed James in the line-up, each flying out to right fielder Sumner to end the game.
Naramore (9-24) made the start for the Lady Eagles, but split time on the mound with Samantha Davis. Naramore was credited with the loss, while Toni Paisley (19-5) received the win for the Pirates, her second win of the weekend.
Southern Miss (18-38, 8-14 C-USA) recorded six hits, two each from James and Kristin Chaney and one each from Fox and Kristin Pilgrim.
East Carolina (38-18, 14-9 C-USA) finished the contest with nine hits, two from Kaui Tom and one each from Sumner, Johnson, Moreno, Roodenburg, Angel Barrella, Bibee and Cristen Aona.
