Southeastern Louisiana Drops Softball, 5-4, in Eight Innings

HAMMOND, La. - In the eighth inning, Amber Gentry singled to left field to score Nicole Schoenberger from third and give Southeastern Louisiana the 5-4 victory over Southern Miss, tonight, at North Oak Park, with 177 in attendance.
Rebecca De la Garza led off in the eighth, receiving a free pass from Lady Eagle pitcher Shea Naramore. After Brooke Lockhart flew out to centerfielder Allison Bullard, Naramore walked her second batter of the inning, sending Kaley Christy to first and pinch runner Schoenberger to second. On the next play, Arica Rodriguez grounded out to catcher Kristin Pilgrim to advance Schoenberger and Christy, before Gentry hit the game-winning single.
Southeastern Louisiana landed on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first, but Southern Miss quickly answered back in the top of the second to record a 4-1 lead.
Bullard led off in the inning, hitting a single through the left side, advanced to second when Ashlyn Harmon grounded out to pitcher Rachel Ray, stole third and scored when Melissa Prouty reached first on a fielder's choice. Kristin Chaney then singled to send Prouty to third, before Brandi Alonzo singled to left field to send Prouty home for the score. Later in the inning, Logan James doubled to left field, scoring Alonzo from third and Jennifer Fox from first.
Southeastern Louisiana notched single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to tie the game at 4-4.
Southern Miss (18-35) finished the contest with a game-high 11 hits, three each from Alonzo and Chaney and one each from Fox, James, Hill, Pilgrim and Bullard.
Southeastern Louisiana (29-26) tallied nine hits, two each from Heather Sherrill and Lockhart and one each from Gentry, Michelle Lemons, Carolann Wenesch, Allyson McCubbins and Christy.
Shea Naramore (9-23) received the loss for Southern Miss, while Ray (19-10) recorded the win for Southeastern.
Southern Miss returns to action this weekend, hosting C-USA rival East Carolina in a three-game series, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 5.
