Ezell and Sutton Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss senior pitcher Patrick Ezell and junior first baseman Trey Sutton were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 6 Team, announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Ezell has a 3.73 grade point average and is majoring in history with a minor in coaching and sport administration. He has been on the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll for four years, the president's list for two semesters and the dean's list for four semesters.
After starting for the past three years, he became the team's closer this season. He is 2-2 with eight saves and a 1.25 ERA in 21.2 innings pitched. He has given up three earned runs on 22 hits and has only allowed five extra base (all doubles) hits this season. This season, he was a factor in the final decision in 12-of-19 games.
Named to the 2007 NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award Midseason "Watch List", he is tied for No. 3 in Conference USA in saves, tied for No. 3 in games finished and is nationally ranked in saves. He has struck out two or more batters five different times. The Golden Eagles are 24-1 when leading after the seventh inning and 24-0 when leading after the eighth inning.
Sutton has a 3.75 grade point average and is majoring in business administration. He is on the all-district team for the second year and has been on the President's List once and the dean's list four times. He has been on the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and was selected as a C-USA Academic Medalist for two years.
Southern Miss' leadoff hitter leads the Golden Eagles in hitting (.358), runs scored (56), hits (72), doubles (15), triples (3), total bases (111), slugging percentage (.552), on-base percentage (.456), putouts (461), fielding percentage among infielders (.994) and fielding double plays (34). He is tied for first in fewest strikeouts among starters and second on the team in home runs (6), RBIs (31) and walks (31).
In Conference USA statistics, he leads the league in runs scored, hits and total bases, No. 2 in on-base percentage, No. 3 in batting average and doubles, tied for No. 3 in triples, No. 4 in slugging percentage, tied for No. 6 in walks, tied for No. 10 in home runs. Leads the team in fielding putouts (461), tied for No. 5 in fielding double plays and No. 11 in fielding percentage.
He is currently on a 13-game hitting streak and leads the team with 24 multiple-hit games (17 games with two hits, six with three, one with four), has 10 multiple-RBI games (seven games with two RBIs, one with three, two with four), 17 multiple-run games, eight multiple-walk games, four multiple-double games and one multiple-homer game.
The Golden Eagles host Dallas Baptist for a three-game non-conference weekend series on Saturday, May 12 in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m., and on Sunday, May 13 in a 1 p.m., game.
