MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- - The Golden Eagle men's tennis team claimed a 4-3 win over Memphis in Conference USA action, Saturday afternoon.
Southern Miss improved to 10-9 and 3-1 in the league, while Memphis dropped to 8-10 and 1-3.
"I was really please with the win and the effort we showed today," Head Coach Teddy Viator said. "We competed well and ending the season on a good note heading into the conference tournament. This win should help us get a good seed.
The Tigers opened the match with a 1-0 lead, after winning the doubles' point. Benedikt Fischer and Cody Loup (MEM) topped Andrew Poole and Callen Fraychineaud, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. Memphis clinched the point when Charlie Ramsey and Jimmy Khougassian (MEM) knocked off Domagoj Anic and Markus Wessinghage, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles. Brothers Oscar and Diego Machuca won 8-5 at the No. 3 doubles against Pilant Garrison and Spencer Heflin (MEM).
"I thought we learned to compete in a close match today," said Viator. "Andrew stepped up his game. Domagoj battled in his match and won in spite of lower back injury. Oscar continues to play well."
Southern Miss posted wins at No. 1, 2, 4 and 6 singles. Poole came back after being down a set to win, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, against Khougassian. Anic battled through lower back pain and outlasted Fischer, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2).
Oscar Machuca recorded his 14th win of the season with a 6-3, 6-2, victory over Loup. Wessinghage made quick work of Putra at No. 6 singles, winning 6-1, 6-0.
"Today's win assures us of a winning season with a tough schedule," Viator said. "And with six freshmen, two sophomores, our future looks very bright."
Southern Miss will travel to Houston, Texas, for the Conference USA Tennis Championship, April 20-22.
