Softball Hosts In-State Rival Mississippi State on Tuesday

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team is scheduled to host in-state rival Mississippi State on Tuesday, April 24, at the Southern Miss Softball Complex in a single game, beginning at 6 p.m. Southern Miss fans can listen to the Lady Eagles softball team on the Southern Miss ISP Sports Network. The games will be available on SouthernMiss.com and on Yahoo Sports. Fans also can follow the game via GameTracker on-line at SouthernMiss.com. Tuesday's contest marks the second meeting between the two teams this season. The Bulldogs claimed a 9-2 victory on April 12 in Starkville, Miss.
Southern Miss (17-31) enters the game after taking a 4-3 win over Conference USA opponent UAB on Sunday, April 22. The Lady Eagles fell to the Blazers twice on Saturday, 3-4 and 5-12.
Mississippi State (30-21) is coming off of a series win against Georgia, 12-5, 2-5, 13-9, last weekend.
The Lady Eagles are hitting .239 with 56 doubles, eight triples and 35 home runs. They are averaging 4.02 runs per game and 5.98 hits per game. The pitching staff has a 4.70 ERA in 308.1 innings pitched, struck out 113 batters, walked 193 and is holding opponents to a .308 batting average.
The Bulldogs are hitting .295 with 58 doubles, 14 triples and 15 home runs. They are averaging 4.94 runs per game and 8.0 hits per game. The pitching staff has a 2.25 ERA in 345.2 innings, struck out 193, walked 80 and is holding opponents to a .242 batting average.
Freshman designated hitter Megan Hill continues to lead the Lady Eagles' offensive unit with a .363 batting average. She currently leads the team in doubles (10), triples (5), home runs (13), RBIs (40), runs scored (37) and walks (27). Freshman Brandi Alonzo is hitting .315 with eight doubles, two triples, four home runs, 21 RBIs, five walks and a team-leading nine stolen bases. Freshman first baseman Logan James is hitting .287 with nine doubles, eight home runs, 20 RBIs and 15 walks.
Freshman Chelsea Bramlett leads the Bulldogs' offense, hitting .395 with nine doubles, a home run, 17 RBIs, 11 walks and 43 stolen bases. Bramlett is followed by junior Courtney Bures and redshirt junior Hayle Guess. Bures is hitting .355 with 11 doubles, two triples, a home run, 47 RBIs, 11 walks and 11 stolen bases, while Guess is hitting .340 with five doubles, four triples, five home runs, 26 RBIs, 16 walks and 21 stolen bases.
On the mound, Southern Miss is led by sophomore pitcher Samantha Davis. Davis is 6-9 with a 2.79 ERA in 110.1 innings, giving up 64 runs, 44 earned, on 132 hits, striking out 47, walking 42 and holding opponent to a .289 batting average.
Mississippi State's defense is fronted by senior pitcher Kelli Miller, who has recorded a 14-9 record with a .1.87 ERA in 123.1 innings. Miller has given up 53 runs, 33 earned, striking out 64, walking 28 and holding opponents to a .237 batting average.
Following the midweek contest, Southern Miss is set to travel to Tulsa, Okla., to face Conference USA opponent Tulsa in a three-game weekend series, beginning Saturday, April 28.
