Mississippi State Softball Downs Lady Eagles, 9-2

STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Mississippi State Bulldogs notched three runs in the second inning en route to a 9-2 victory over Southern Miss, today, at the MSU Softball Field.
Katie Johnson led off for Mississippi State in the second inning, hitting a single down the left field line, advancing to second on a sacrifice hit by Jessie Bailey and third on an illegal pitch from Emily Howard and reaching home on a single by Michelle Kinney. Kinney was sent to second on Chelsea Bramlett's single to left field, and both runners advanced home on a double from Hayle Guess.
Southern Miss scored two runs in the first inning to begin the contest. Following back-to-back hits from Karissa Jones and Logan James, Megan Hill grounded out to the pitcher to put runners on second and third. On the next play Jennifer Fox hit a hard shot to shortstop Courtney Bures, resulting in a fielding error and scoring Jones and James.
The Bulldogs tallied two runs in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game at 2-2, but later added three runs in the second and four in the third to down the Lady Eagles.
Southern Miss (14-27) recorded four hits, one each from Jones, James, Jennifer Fox and Brittany Wright, while Mississippi State (27-17) recorded fifteen.
Emily Howard (1-1) started on the mound for the Lady Eagles and was credited with the loss. Shea Naramore and Samantha Davis also made appearances in the game. Kelli Miller started for the Bulldogs, but split time on the mound with Kelsey Nurnberg (7-2), who received the win, and Sara Hickerson.
Southern Miss returns to action this weekend, hosting Conference USA opponent UTEP in a three-game series, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 14. First pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m., and the second game will begin at approximately 3 p.m. The series finale will begin on Sunday at noon, instead of the originally scheduled 1 p.m.
