HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss soccer team defeated Mississippi State, 3-0, on Saturday in its first competitive match of 2007.
"Overall, I thought it was a great performance by the entire team," Southern Miss Head Coach Gail Macklin said. "We've been practicing for a week and a half, and I thought that the off season conditioning paid off. We looked fit. We started five freshmen, who all contributed, and I was especially pleased with the defensive performance."
At the 15minute mark, Jessica Stephens' free kick from 45yards deflected of the head of Mississippi State's Katie Lynn Hardin to open the score line. Five minutes later, the Lady Eagles scored again when Sarah McFadden finished a cross from freshman Rene Hrapman.
The Lady Eagles controlled most of the possession in the first half and capitalized on a mistake by the MSU defense to add another goal when Jessica Stephens lobbed the keeper from outside the 18yard box.
The second half saw a few opportunities for MSU, but the Southern Miss defense stood strong.
