HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - The men's tennis team came up short against Troy, losing 5-2 Wednesday afternoon at the Racquet Club.
"We played well at No. 3 doubles," Head Coach Teddy Viator said. "We let the No. 2 doubles slip away. We needed to win the doubles' point to give ourselves a chance to win the match against a solid team like Troy. We knew it would be tough winning four of the singles. We competed well, but came up short. Now, we have to get ready to play another solid team tomorrow in Southeastern Louisiana."
Troy (2-5) opened the match, winning the doubles' point. Southern Miss' Diego and Oscar Machuca took the No. 3 doubles, 8-2, over Diego Martinez and Guilherme Sahadi. The Trojans came back with a win at No. 1 doubles when Irving Morales and Dusan Medan downed Andrew Poole and Markus Wessinghage, 8-2. Troy clinched the doubles' point when Bona Ung and Bastian Maucher defeated Domagoj Anic and Callen Fraychineaud, 8-6.
Southern Miss (8-9) tied the match at 1-1 when Strate Krstevski knocked off Martinez in convincing fashion, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5 singles.
Troy regained the lead, 2-1, behind the play of Morales at No. 1 singles in a 6-3, 6-3, win over Poole.
The Golden Eagles knotted the match at 2-2 when Oscar Machuca came from a set down in defeating Maucher, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
From there, it was all Troy. The Trojans tacked on another point, following a 7-6 (4), 6-2, win at No. 6 singles when Sahadi downed Wren Hood. Then clinched the match with a hard fought, 7-6 (4), 6-3 win at No. 2 singles with Ung downing Anic. Troy closed out the match with Medan defeating Diego Machuca, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles.
Southern Miss returns to action on Thursday when the Golden Eagles host Southeastern Louisiana at 1 p.m., at the Racquet Club.
