OXFORD, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team scored four runs in the third inning and one in the seventh to defeat in-state rival Alcorn State 5-3, today, in the first day of Ole Miss' Red and Blue Classic.
Senior outfielder Melissa Prouty opened the third inning with a single up the middle, before advancing to second on Brandi Alonzo's single down the left side and scoring on consecutive walks by Logan James and Megan Hill. Alonzo scored when Lauren Castellvi singled down the left side, and Kristin Pilgrim notched two RBIs, hitting a single up the middle to score James and Hill.
In the seventh inning, Hill doubled down the left field line and was sent home on Castellvi's sacrifice fly to give the Lady Eagles a 5-3 lead.
"It's good to have a win," Southern Miss Head Coach Gay McNutt said. "It wasn't the exact performance that we wanted. We have to get Shae (Naramore) some help, and we didn't adjust offensively to their pitching. We have to stay positive because a win is a win, and we'll take it."
After beginning the game with one run in the first inning, the Lady Braves added two more runs in the third to cut Southern Miss' lead down to one.
With the win, the Lady Eagles improve to a 5-10 record, and Naramore recorded her fourth win of the season. Naramore finished with one strikeout, pitching five innings, while Samantha Davis made her pitching debut of the season, throwing two innings with two strikeouts.
On offense, Southern Miss tallied nine hits, three from Alonzo and one each from Hill, Jennifer Fox, Castellvi, Pilgrim, Brittany Wright and Prouty.
