ORLANDO, Fla. - Sophomore pitcher Samantha Davis held UCF to only two runs in the bottom of the seventh to give Southern Miss a 6-3 victory and split the first day of competition.
Davis relieved Shea Naramore in the seventh inning with Golden Knight runners on first and third and no outs. While both runners scored, Davis faced five batters before retiring UCF with two runners left on base.
"It was definitely a group effort," Head Coach Gay McNutt said. "I was disappointed about the first game, but I was extremely excited about the second game and the win."
Southern Miss was the first to score in the contest, when freshman Brandi Alonzo singled up the middle in the second inning, scoring Melissa Prouty and Allison Bullard and giving the Lady Eagles the 2-0 lead.
UCF quickly answered back with one run in the bottom of the second. Morgan Bullard singled, reached second on a throwing error by shortstop Kristen Chaney, advanced to third on a wild pitch by Shea Naramore and scored when Cici Alvarez singled to second base.
Alonzo contributed again, sending a hard shot out to left field which resulted in an error by left fielder Bullard, scoring Chaney and Lauren Castellvi.
Shea Naramore (7-16) gets the win for the Lady Eagles, while Ashleigh Cole (7-6) was credited with a loss.
Southern Miss (10-19, 1-4) combined for a total of six hits, two from Castellvi and one each from Alonzo, Logan James, Emily Howard and Bullard. UCF (19-13, 1-4) tallied 11 hits in the contest and stranded 11 runners on base.
