Softball Defeats Florida A&M, 12-5

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Southern Miss softball team used a seven-run second inning on the way to a 12-5 victory over Florida A&M, today, in the first game of a doubleheader at the Lady Rattlers Softball Complex.
Sophomore catcher Kristin Pilgrim opened the second inning with a single, stole second, advanced to third on Allison Bullard's fielder's choice and reached home on Karissa Jones' two-RBI double, which also scored Lauren Castellvi. On the next play, Brandi Alonzo singled to score Jones and give the Lady Eagles a 4-0 lead. Newcomer Kristin Chaney recorded her first RBI of the season, grounding out to first base but scoring Bullard. Later in the inning, freshman Megan Hill recorded her seventh home run of the season, scoring Alonzo and Logan James and giving Southern Miss the 8-0 lead.
Florida A&M wouldn't go down quietly, recording one run in the third inning, two in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Alacia Strafford notched the first run for the Lady Rattlers, sending a shot past right fielder Bullard for an in-the-park home run.
Southern Miss was the first team to score in the ball game, earning one run in the first inning on Hill's sacrifice fly to score Alonzo.
The Lady Eagles added four more runs in the sixth inning to clinch the win. Hill and Melissa Prouty each reached the plate on wild pitches, before Castellvi recorded her third home run of the season, a one-out two-RBI shot over center field.
With the win, Southern Miss improved its record to 8-18, while Florida A&M fell to 6-17.
Sophomore pitcher Samantha Davis (1-2) recorded her first win of the season, finishing the contest with three strikeouts and only two walks. Alicia Mitchell was credited with the loss for the Lady Rattlers, tallying only one strikeout.
The Lady Eagles recorded a total of 10 hits, including three from Alonzo, two from Jones and one each from James, Hill, Fox, Pilgrim and Castellvi.
