TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Southern Miss softball team dropped two games to No. 25 Florida State, today, at JoAnne Graf Field.
The first contest was a pitching dual between Southern Miss' Samantha Davis (0-2) and Florida State's Tiffany McDonald (6-5), which resulted in a 2-0 loss for the Lady Eagles. Davis finished with four strikeouts in the six innings on the mound.
Yuruby Alicart started the second inning for the Seminoles with a walk, before advancing all the way to third on a single by Robin Ahrberg. A double to the left field gap by Brittany Osmon scored Alicart with the first run.
Three innings later the Seminoles tacked on another run to take a 2-0 lead. Center fielder Whitney Buckmon led off with a walk and stole second base. One out later, Veronica Wootson recorded a double to the left field gap to score Buckmon.
The Seminoles tallied seven hits during the contest, while the Lady Eagles finished with only two, one each from freshman Megan Hill and junior Jennifer Fox.
In the second competition of the day, Shea Naramore and Emily Howard split time on the mound in the 6-1 loss. Naramore pitched 2.1 innings with only one strikeout for the loss, while Howard pitched the remaining 3.2 innings without any strikeouts.
The Seminoles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning with a pair of runs. Catcher Brittany Krbec led off with a single to right field and centerfielder Carly Wynn put runners on first and second, following a controversial call claiming that center fielder Kristen Chaney didn't hang onto the ball while making a diving catch. A sacrifice bunt moved pinch runner Courtney Rosen and Wynn up a base and Buckmon brought them home with a single through the right side that tipped off the pitcher's glove.
Florida State (20-8) picked up another run in the third with the help of a Southern Miss miscue. Right fielder LaShaun Davis (Marietta, Ga.) started the frame with a single and moved up on a wild pitch. After a sacrifice got her to third, Alicart brought Davis in with a double to left field. For some insurance Snyder tacked on two runs in the fourth with her two run home run that also scored Buckmon.
The Lady Eagles recorded two hits, one from Megan Hill and one from Lauren Castellvi, while the Seminoles finished with 10 hits. Castellvi provided the only run for Southern Miss (7-18), hitting a homer to left field, her second of the season and her career.
Southern Miss returns to action on Wednesday, March 14, remaining in Tallahassee to take on Florida A&M in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
