Softball Drops Two to Houston in C-USA Opening Weekend

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team dropped two games, 6-2, 5-0, against Houston, today, at the Southern Miss Softball Complex, in front of 522 in attendance, in Conference USA's opening weekend.
Houston came out on top after the first contest, defeating Southern Miss, 6-2. The Cougars recorded seven hits, while the Lady Eagles tallied five.
Freshman Logan James recorded both runs for Southern Miss, recording her sixth and seventh home runs of the season and her career. Freshmen Megan Hill and Lauren Castellvi recorded the other hit for Southern Miss, Hill having two and Castellvi having one.
C-USA Preseason Pitcher of the Year Angel Shamblin (11-4) earned the win for the Cougars, while Shea Naramore and Emily Howard split time on the mound for Southern Miss. Naramore recorded one strikeout and was credited with the loss.
The Lady Eagles were shutout, 5-0, in the second game, earning only two hits, one from Kristin Pilgrim and one from Brittany Wright. The Cougars recorded eight hits, including home runs from Laura Durham and Haley Valis.
Barbie Love (3-2) threw for five strikeouts and the win for Houston, while Shea Naramore (6-15) was credited with the loss. Samantha Davis also spent time on the mound for the Lady Eagles, recorded four strikeouts.
Southern Miss (7-15, 0-2) and Houston (19-2-0) return to action on Sunday for the final game of the series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
