Southern Miss Falls to Tulane

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Freshman Kevin Sims had a game-high 23 points to lead Tulane to a 79-64 Conference USA victory over Southern Miss here Saturday night in front of 4,006 spectators at Reed Green Coliseum.
David Gomez added 18 points, while Chris Moore contributed 16 points and 10 rebounds leading the Green Wave to their second victory in the last five games. Southern Miss lost at home for only the second time in 14 games this season.
Freshman Jeremy Wise paced the Golden Eagles (14-7 overall, 4-4 C-USA) with 19 points, while fellow freshman Sai'Quon Stone added 18 and sophomore Courtney Beasley tallied 14.
The Green Wave (10-10, 3-5) jumped out of the gate early by scoring the first eight points of the contest and hitting 8 of their first 9 shots to go up 18-9 after seven and a half minutes.
Southern Miss closed the margin to three at 24-21 with 7:55 left in the opening half, but the Green Wave outscored the home squad 17-10 over the final portion of the opening half to take a 41-31 advantage at the break. Tulane finished the first half shooting 68.4 percent (13-of-19).
The gap was cut in the second half to five, 52-47, with 11:47 remaining, but Tulane scored 13 of the next 17 points and Southern Miss could only close the gap to seven points just once the remainder of the night as the Green Wave pulled away at the end.
Southern Miss won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the visitors 35-32, but Tulane finished the night shooting 57.5 percent (23-of-40), while the Golden Eagles were 35.6 percent (21-of-59).
The Golden Eagles return to the road in their next outing, when they face Rice in Houston. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
