Women's Tennis team sweeps Stephen F. Austin, 7-0

NATCHITOCHES, La. -- - The Southern Miss women's tennis team remained undefeated, pushing it record to 4-0 following a 7-0 sweep of Stephen F. Austin on Saturday in the Northwestern State tri-match.
"I was pleased and happy with the way our team played today," Head Coach Randy Rowley said. "We had a couple of players who were able to work through some things and come out on top.
Southern Miss opened the match sweeping the doubles competition with No. 3 doubles earning the first Golden Eagle win of the day with Ali Blackett and Grace Kammerer defeating Rijalda Zejnic and Lauren Nowicki (SFA), 8-0. Freshmen Stephanie Dellocono and Lauren Gutterman defeated Gabriela Gadeva and Tatiana Smolnikova (SFA) at No. 2 doubles, 8-1.
The Lady Eagles completed the sweep with Sherry Price and Brittany Serret teaming together for an 8-3 win over Roxanna Enica and Laura Harrison.
Southern Miss took the momentum into singles play. It was business as usual with the No. 3, 4, and 5 singles. Dellocono put the Eagles ahead, 2-0, winning in straight sets at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-2, over Gadeva. Serret followed with a victory at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1 over Harrison.
Blackett clinched the match for Southern Miss at No. 3 singles, winning the fourth points with a 6-3, 6-3, win over Nowicki.
Price made her match a little interesting after winning the first set, 6-4, had to hold off Enica in the second set for a 7-5 win.
Kammerer jumped out to a quick 5-0 start against Somlnikova in the first set, but Smolnikova rallied back, but Kammerer was able to hold on for the 7-5 win in the first set, then, cruised to a 6-3 win in the second set.
Natalia Parrado won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 6 singles.
"Grace Kammerer was up 5-0 in a set and lost some points, but she was able to refocus and pull out the match in straight sets," Rowley said. "I was proud of the way Grace and Natalie worked to win their matches."
Southern Miss returns to action against host Northwestern State on Sunday at 11 a.m.
