Lady Eagles Defeated by Kentucky, 12-2

WACO, Texas - The Southern Miss Lady Eagle softball team took another loss in the Getterman Classic, today, against Kentucky, 12-2.
Kentucky's Wildcats earned a quick lead in the first inning, with Alli Eckman hitting a three-run home run over the right center wall, scoring Natalie Smith and Marnitz.
Later in the top of the first, junior Allison Bullard made a spectacular play from center field, throwing out Katie Campbell at home.
After retiring the Wildcats, Southern Miss answered back with an exciting first inning. Bullard started the inning for the Lady Eagles with a high shot to left for a double and was later sent to third on a sacrifice bunt by Logan James. Freshman designated player Megan Hill followed with a triple to right center, sending Bullard home for the score.
In the top of the second, Kentucky scored two more runs, as Brooke Marnitz hit a homer over left field, scoring Natalie Smith and extending the Wildcat lead to 5-1.
Kentucky scored four in the third inning, following a controversial call at second base, sending Head Coach Gay McNutt out on the field.
The Lady Eagles held the Wildcats scoreless in the fourth inning, retiring three-consecutive batters.
In the bottom of the fourth, junior third baseman Jennifer Fox got things started for Southern Miss with a double to left field. Sophomore catcher Kristin Pilgrim followed with a line drive out to center field, sending pinch runner Krystle Dawson in for the score.
The Wildcats scored three runs in the fifth, extending the lead to 12-2.
Freshman Brandi Alonzo hit a double to center field in the bottom of the fifth, but the Lady Eagles were unable to add any runs, putting and end to the competition.
For the Lady Eagles, Bullard finished 1-for-3 and Alonzo went 2-for-2, while Hill, Fox and Pilgrim all finished 1-for-2.
Junior pitcher Shea Naramore pitched the entire game for Southern Miss, recording her third loss of the tournament and the season.
Southern Miss continues play in the Getterman Classic, today, as they take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 2 p.m.
