East Carolina Sweeps Lady Eagle Volleyball Team, 3-0

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- - The Southern Miss volleyball team closed out its road swing, losing to East Carolina in three games by a score of 30-19, 30-23, 30-27.
Angela Hlavaty led the Lady Eagles with 17 kills, followed by Morgan Johnson with 10 kills and five blocks. Kelley Wernert led the Pirates with a match-high 19 kills and Melissa Zentner added 11 kills.
East Carolina (14-14, 5-8) started game one scoring the first nine points, taking a 9-0 lead. Southern Miss battled back to within five points, 20-15, but ECU closed out game one on a 10-4 run for a 30-19 win.
Southern Miss (10-20, 1-13) led early, 5-2, when East Carolina scored seven-straight points to take a 9-5 lead. The Pirates pushed ahead by six, 16-10, before the Lady Eagles used an 11-4 run to regain the lead at 21-20. With the game tied, 22-22, ECU then scored five unanswered points for a 27-22 lead. ECU held on for a 30-23 win.
Both teams battled back and forth to open game three. With the game tied 10-10, ECU then used a 13-6 run, taking a 23-6 lead. From there, Southern Miss put together a run take got the Lady Eagles within two points, 29-27, but ECU ended Southern Miss' run with a kill by Peyton Thompson for a 30-27 win.
Southern Miss returns to action next weekend, playing UCF in back-to-back matches. The Lady Eagles travel to UCF on Friday, then return home to for senior day while hosting UCF on Sunday in the season finale.
