HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - The Southern Miss Lady Eagle softball team recorded two wins in their own Southern Miss Fall Classic, defeating Gulf Coast Community College, 9-1, and Co-Lin Community 10-4 in the night cap.
"We were real pleased with the way we came out playing today," Southern Miss coach Howard Dobson said. "We wanted to set the tone early and we felt like we did that against Gulf Coast. We battled against a pretty good pitcher today.
"Gulf Coast is one of the top junior colleges in the country and a team to be reckoned with. So, for our players to see a quality pitcher like that, it was nice to see us battle and fight and do what we did. We didn't leave a lot of runners on, executed our game plan and our pitchers did well."
Southern Miss finished with seven hits against Gulf Coast, highlighted by Kristin Pilgrim's two-run blast over the left field fence in the bottom of the second. Pilgrim also recorded a single, along with Brittany Pigott, Logan James, Kristin Chaney, Lauren Castellvi and Ashlyn Harmon.
Megan Harbuck went the distance, pitching five innings, allowing just one hit and one earned run. She struck out six batters.
Against Co-Lin, Southern Miss recorded 11 hits, led by Brandi Alonzo who went 3-for-4. Jennifer Fox added a single and double. Pigott, Chaney, Krystal Dawson, Karissa Jones, and Brittney Jones each added a single.
"We didn't play as well against Co-Lin," Dobson said. "I thought we had too many walks and surrendered too many two-out rallies. That's one thing we can't afford to give a team hope. We helped them back up after we had knocked them down. We have to do a better job of closing the door. All-in-all, our goal was to be 2-0 and we accomplished that."
Hannah Griffin worked the first three innings, giving up one run on one hit. Shea Naramore came in and pitched one inning, allowing three runs on three hits. Lana Vaughn pitched the last two innings, giving up one double.
The tournament resumes on Sunday, beginning with William Carey and Co-Lin at 12 p.m., followed by Southern Miss and William Carey at 2 p.m. Delta State plays Co-Lin at 4 p.m., concluding with Southern Miss and Delta State a 6 p.m.
Southern Miss will play one more fall home game on Wednesday, Oct. 10, against Jones County Junior College at 6 p.m., at the Softball Complex. Admission is free.
