HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - The Southern Miss softball team recorded 19 hits in its extended-inning win against Pearl River Community College, 13-6, Tuesday night.
Ten different players recorded a hit, including senior Brittney Pigott who led the way with four, while Megan Hill and Logan James added three hits apiece.
"I was pleased with the team's efforts," Head Coach Howard Dobson said. "Playing 12 innings was a little long and toward the end you start to get tired and fatigued. The effort in coming back and the way they responded when they gave up a run was nice to see. Being a younger team like they are, and actually come back and respond every inning, was especially nice to see."
Southern Miss got on the scoreboard first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third inning when Pigott singled up the middle, and Hill followed with a single to left. Both scored on a three-base error.
PRCC responded with a run in the fourth, but the Lady Eagles matched the Wildcats with a run of their on in the bottom half of the inning. Southern Miss added two more runs in the fifth, when Jennifer Fox collected a two-run double to right center.
"We are not going to be a team to hit tons of homers, but we will be able to string things together," Dobson said. "We saw that we were able to score multiple runs in an inning. It was nice to see us score two or three runs in the first six innings when there were two outs."
PRCC cut the lead to one, 6-5, after scoring two runs in the top of eight, but Southern Miss responded with a five-run inning, highlighted by a triple by Kristin Chaney.
Four Lady Eagle pitchers gave up 10 hits, as they all worked a total of three innings each, combining to strike out 13 PRCC batters.
"The pitchers threw well," said Dobson. "We still have some things to work on because we are not where we need to be. We gave up more runs than we wanted to and we had too many errors, but that's part of it. We just have to get back out there and work some more. It was a nice first day and a good first step."
The Lady Eagles will host their annual Fall Invitational, Oct. 6-7, at the USM Softball Complex. Saturday's slate begins with Gulf Coast taking on William Carey at 12 p.m., followed by Co-Lin and Carey at 2 p.m. Southern Miss will play Gulf Coast at 4 p.m., and Co-Lin at 6 p.m.
