Tulsa Sweeps Southern Miss In Conference USA Volleyball Action

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - Tulsa's Kassiana recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs in leading the Golden Hurricane to a 3-0 sweep of Southern Miss in Conference USA volleyball action Friday night.
Southern Miss dropped to 7-9 and 0-2 in the league while Tulsa improved to 15-3 and 2-0.
Mari Ruddick led Southern Miss with eight kills while Amanda Blunck, Angela Hlavaty and Ashley Petrinec recorded seven kills apiece. Maia Ivanova had 13 digs for the Lady Eagles with Blunck and Kristen Metz adding 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
Both teams opened game won battling back and forth early. With Southern Miss leading 16-13, Tulsa used a 6-0 run to take a 19-16 lead. The Lady Eagles fought back, cutting the lead to one, 19-18, but Tulsa scored two points off Southern Miss miscues to push its lead to 21-18. From there the Golden Hurricane finished game one on a 9-7 run, defeating Southern Miss 30-27.
Tulsa used a 7-0 run midway through game two, breaking a 14-14 tie for a 21-14 lead, behind the service game of Kelsey Wood. Tulsa ended game two on a 9-3 run for a 30-17 win.
Southern Miss came out tough in game three battling back from a 6-3 deficit to take an 11-9 lead following a 7-3 run. Tulsa then went on an 8-2 run, taking a 17-13 lead. Southern Miss cut the lead to one, 17-16, but Tulsa put the pressure on with a tough service game and a solid offensive attack to win, 30-26.
Southern Miss returns to action on Sunday, when the Lady Eagles travel to Dallas, Texas, to play SMU in a 1 p.m., match.
