Southern Miss Loses Both Matches In Sam Houston State Invitational

HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- - Southern Miss volleyball team dropped matches in the Sam Houston State Invitational Saturday, losing to Radford, 3-2 (30-19, 22-30, 27-30, 30-21, 8-15), and to host Sam Houston State, 3-1 (20-30, 27-30, 32-30, 24-30). Southern Miss falls to 3-4 on the season.
In the Radford match, four Southern Miss players recorded double-digit kills, led by Morgan Johnson with 13. Ashley Petrinec, Mari Ruddick and Nicole Rock added 12 kills each. Maia Ivanova recorded a team-high 22 digs to go with seven service aces.
Southern Miss won the first game, before Radford won the next two games. The Lady Eagles won the fourth game, forcing a game five. Radford jumped out to an early and held on for the 15-8 win.
In the Sam Houston State match there were 37 ties and 16 lead changes. Sam Houston won the first two games, 30-20 and 30-27, before the Lady Eagles took game three, 32-30. The Bearkats won the fourth game, 30-24.
Petrinec finished the match with 15 kills and 16 digs. Ivanova recorded 20 digs. Cassie Lavery added 10 digs, while recording 24 assists.
Ashley Petrinec received all-tournament honors, finishing the tournament with 45 kills, two aces, 53 digs and nine total blocks.
Southern Miss returns to action on Sept. 5, in its home-opener against South Alabama in the Payne Center on the Southern Miss campus. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. Admission to all the home matches is free, compliments of Forrest General Hospital.
