Southern Miss Volleyball Team Heads To Sam Houston State Invitational

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - The Lady Eagle volleyball team hits the road, competing in their second straight tournament, when they travel to Huntsville, Texas, for the Sam Houston State Invitational, Sept. 1-2.
Southern Miss is coming off a 2-1 weekend, where the Lady Eagles finished second in the Capital One Classic. The Lady Eagles lost to Mississippi State in the opening game, 3-0, but won their last two matches, a 3-2 win over Louisiana-Lafayette and 3-1 over Southeastern Louisiana.
Sophomore Ashley Petrinec and freshman Maia Ivanova were named to the all-tournament team for their respective performances. Petrinec finished the weekend with 39 kills and 33 digs, while Ivanova had 53 digs and three aces.
Petrinec leads the team in kills with 39, while Ivanova leads the team in digs with 53. Cassie Lavery leads the team in assists with 83. Lavery and Ivanova recorded three aces each.
North Texas (1-3) opened the season at the Texas State Tournament. The Mean Green lost to Wyoming, USC and UT-Pan American and defeated Texas State. Brittney Gregory leads the team in kills with 40. Head Coach Cassie Headrick is in her seventh season.
Louisiana Tech is coming off an 0-4 weekend at the Wichita State Tournament. The Techsters faced Eastern Washington, Wichita State, Texas-San Antonio and Syracuse. Head Coach Heather Mazeitis is in her fifth season. Shannon Phillips leads the team in kills with 57.
Radford opened its season at the Appalachian State Tournament, going 0-3, with losses to Middle Tennessee, Appalachian State and Marshall. Head Coach Crystal Poskey is in her first season. Lexi Miller leads the team in kills with 35.
Following the Sam Houston State Invitational, Southern Miss opens its home portion of its schedule, Sept. 5, against South Alabama. Match time is set for 7 p.m. Admission to all matches is free, compliments of Forrest General Hospital.
