HATTIESBURG, Miss. - It was an early morning practice for the Southern Miss football team today, as it hit the field in M.M. Roberts Stadium at 5:45 a.m., for a hour and a half practice. The team will now have the remainder of the weekend off.
Head Coach Jeff Bower said the morning's practice was heavy on the kicking game.
"We did a lot of work in the kicking game," Bower said. "We emphasized that. We worked all phases in the kicking game, including special situations. We had good work. We lost some time yesterday. We didn't kick at all because of the weather, and we didn't have time to do it because of night classes. We caught up this morning."
Bower said that junior offensive lineman Gary Jones (ankle) was in a boot and was held out of practice today. In addition, junior Jerome Lyons (infection) also missed today's practice.
"Jerome will be fine," Bower said. "He'll be ready to go on Monday. With the weekend off, we ought to be a lot better on Monday."
The Golden Eagles return to practice on Monday, which will be the final week of practice in preparation for the season-opening game at Florida on Saturday, Sept. 2.
"I told the players to take a break, enjoy themselves and stay off their feet," Bower said. "Then come back ready to go on Monday."
Season tickets are still now on sale. Additional information on tickets or Eagle Club membership is available by contacting the Southern Miss Ticket Office at 1-800-844-TICK, 601-266-5418, or online at www.SouthernMiss.com.
