HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team specifically began work for the season-opening game against Florida today, as the team practiced for two hours at the Joe Park Practice Facility, the last hour in a light drizzle.
Today was the first normal practice day for the Golden Eagle football team, as classes began for the players.
Head Coach Jeff Bower said the team is right on schedule in its preparations for the season-opening game, despite what he called a bad practice day today.
"We're on track," Bower said. "We didn't practice well today. That's not good. We started work on Florida, looking at their base looks. We're getting there, but we need to practice better. We've got to work harder. We got some things in. Luckily, we got things in with the bad weather. We didn't run through it with the effort we needed to."
Bower said following practice that senior defensive back Jasper Faulk (hamstring) missed his third straight practice, but today was a result of getting a few teeth pulled. Freshman linebacker Brandon Davis also was held out of practice today.
The team returns to the practice field tomorrow afternoon.
Season tickets are still now on sale. Additional information on tickets or Eagle Club membership is available by contacting the Southern Miss Ticket Office at 1-800-844-TICK, 601-266-5418, or online at www.SouthernMiss.com.
Southern Miss opens the season on Sept. 2, with a 5 p.m., contest at Florida.
